많은 퍼스널 컴퓨터들 혹은 모바일 어플리케이션들과 관련하여 키/밸류데이터(key/value data)의 저장을 위하여 소용량 데이터베이스 라이브러리들에 널리 사용 되고 있는 오라클의 Berkeley DB 라이선스가 변경되었다. 오랜기간동안 특유의 카피레프트 라이선스인“슬리피캣라이선스(Sleepycat License)” (이 라이선스는 오라클이 인수한 회사인 슬리피캣이라는 회사에 그 기원을 두고 있음) 하에 있던 Berkeley DB가, 이제부터는 강력한 카피레프트라이선스인 “아페로GPL” 혹은 “AGPL” 하에 놓이게 되었다.
새로 적용되는 AGPL은 FSF (Free Software Foundation)에 의해 공표되고, OSI (Open Source Initiative)에 의해 승인을 받은 라이선스이다. AGPL은 자신의 웹애플리케이션 일부분에 변형된 버전의 프로그램을 활용한 당사자가 있을 경우, 그와 같은 웹애플리케이션을 사용하는 사용자들에게 소스코드를 제공 할 것을 요구한다.
일부IT 애널리스트들은 오라클이 이와 같이 Berkeley DB를 AGPL로 바꾼것은, 이와같이 했을 경우에 오라클이 자사가 저작권을 소유하고 있으면서 판매하고 있는 “라이브러리(library) 의 상업적 라이선스(commercial licenses)”의 판매를 증대 시킬 수 있을것으로 스스로 판단했기 때문이라고 전망했다.

Oracle's Berkeley DB, a widely-used small database library providing key/value data storage for many personal computer and mobile applications, has changed its license. Long issued under an idiosyncratic copyleft license, the "Sleepycat License" iginated by Oracle's predecessor in interest, Berkeley DB will now be issued under the Affero GPL, or AGPL license, a strong copyleft license, published by the Free Software Foundation and approved by Open Source Initiative (OSI). AGPL requires parties who use modified versions of the program as part of their web applications to provide source code to the web application's users. Some industry analysts have speculated that Oracle believes moving the Berkeley DB to AGPL will increase the market for commercial licenses for the library, which Oracle, as copyright holder, also sells.
