Firefox OS is a FOSS operating system for phones, tablets, desktops and other devices which is based heavily on web technologies such as HTML5. The software's development is lead by the Mozilla Foundation, the organization responsible for the popular open source web browser Firefox. The web technologies underlying Firefox OS are the same technologies underlying the Firefox browser. The web is fast becoming the universal computing platform of the modern era and is already prevalent and well supported on devices ranging from traditional PCs, the new generation of mobile phones and tablets and any number of embedded devices regardless of their operating systems. The goal of Firefox OS is to bring the power an flexibility of the open web directly to the operating system level.
As Mozilla explains,
We’re bringing Firefox OS to the world so that smartphones and other devices can begin to advance and adapt at the pace of the Web. The number of mobile app developers building for Firefox OS is expected to triple over the next year, and there are millions more HTML5 developers who can participate without learning a new programming language.
