Linksys Embraces Open Source Firmware Projects; Introduces a Successor to the Popular WRT54G Series

At the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2012, Linksys announced its new WRT 1900AC router.
Even a quick glance at the new product calls to mind the design of the ubiquitous Linksys WRT54G router and its various progeny. The similarity between the products is no coincidence; Linksys is pitching this new device as a successor to its iconic brand flagship.
Linksys has brought the specs up to date with features such as a 1.2GHz dual-core ARM-based processor, 128MB Flash, 256MB DDR3 RAM, support for 802.11a/b/g/n/ac wireless and both USB 3.0 and eSATA ports. However the most notable feature of the WRT1900AC it's expected support for custom open source firmware. The WRT54G's success was in part due to its popularity amongst custom firmware projects. Open source projects such as DD-RT, Tomato, and OpenWRT offer custom firmware for the WRT54G series which capabilities far beyond those of the official Linksys firmware.
The expanded feature sets and active software maintenance provided by these communities offered a significant value to customers which kept them in use long beyond their expected useful lives.
In the past Linksys declined to officially endorse these open source alternatives but with the WRT 1900AC Linksys has made a deliberate decision to satisfy customer demand by embracing open source firmware projects. According to the company, it has been working with OpenWRT developers, providing hardware and software support, with the goal that the WRT 1900AC will be OpenWRT compatible as soon after launch as possible. Linksys has even gone so far as to make open source compatibility a headline feature of this new premium product.
