Huawei settles with Rockstar Consortium

Huawei, the Chinese networking and telecommunications equipment giant has apparently broken ranks with its co-defendants to settle a patent suit brought by the Rockstar Consortium. The Rockstar Consortium is the jointly-owned entity set up by Apple, Blackberry, Ericsson, Microsoft, and Sony to hold the patent portfolio purchased from the bankrupt Canadian telecommunications and networking equipment manufacturer Nortel. Rockstar filed suit in late October against Google and Android original equipment manufacturers ASUSTeK, LG, HTC, Huawei, Pantech, Samsung, and ZTE.
On January 21st 2014, Huawei and Rockstar filed jointly to dismiss the charges against Huawei pursuant to the terms of an undisclosed agreement between the two companies. It is widely assumed that Huawei and Rockstar have struck a licensing deal for the ex-Nortel portfolio.

Google and Samsung announced a broad global cross-licensing deal on January 26th, 2014. The two companies are both deeply invested in the Android ecosystem. The partnership involves a cross-license for not only elements of their existing portfolios but also for patents filed by the companies over the next 10 years. Precise details concerning the scope of the agreement have not been released.
In a press release announcing the deal Samsung asserted that the agreement would lead to "deeper collaboration on research and development of current and future products and technologies."
The companies are portraying their arrangement as a model for other companies to come together to focus on collaborative innovation rather than expensive patent litigation. Allen Lo, Deputy General Counsel for Patents at Google observed that “[b]y working together on agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential for litigation and focus instead on innovation.” Dr. Seungho Ahn, the Head of Samsung’s Intellectual Property Center similarly remarked that through their agreement “Samsung and Google are showing the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes.”

On a related front, on January 27th 2014 Samsung and Swedish networking equipment manufacturer Ericsson signed a renewed licensing deal that will put an end to a long running patent dispute between the two companies. Exact details on the license are scant but analysts anticipate that the in addition to royalties Samsung will pay Ericsson $650 million for its sizable patent portfolio containing over 33,000 patents covering technologies related to variety of critical wireless networking standards as well as to the mobile telephone handset market generally.
It is unclear how long this agreement is set to run for but considering the history of this dispute it may not be long until these two companies return to the negotiating table again.
