세계적인 전자회사인 LG전자의 한국 디비전은, 2014년 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 에서, 올해 출시되는 자사 스마트TV의70%에 오픈소스 OS 운영 체제인 “웹 OS” (Web OS) 가 탑재될 것이라고 발표하였다. 웹OS는 팜(Palm)사의 소형 디바이스 운영체제로 최초 제작되었으며, HP의 팜(Palm) 인수 이후 웹OS는 “오픈 웹OS 프로젝트” (open Web OS project)로 대중에 배포 되었다.
웹OS는 모바일 기기를 위한 운영 시스템으로 인식되어 왔으나, 하이테크 텔레비전 엔터테인먼트 시스템을 위한 공개 소프트웨어로 새롭게 탄생하였다. 웹OS TV는 일반적인 스마트TV와 같이 넷플릭스(Netflix), 아마존(Amazon), 훌루(Hulu) 및 여타 콘텐츠 제공업체들이 공급하는 스트리밍 서비스와 같은 앱 등을 모두 제공할 것이며, 빌트인 웹 브라우저 및 트위터(Twitter)와 같은 인기 폰 앱 등의 사양을 제공 할 예정이다.
공개 웹OS 프로젝트는LG에서 후원하는 또 다른 오픈 소스 프로젝트인EnyoJS 를 굉장히 많이 사용하고 있다. EnyoJS는 크로스 플랫폼 애플리케이션 개발 키트(kit)이며, 동일 코드 베이스를 활용한다. 또한, EnyoJS를 이용하면 모바일 및 데스크탑 애플리케이션을 제작 할 수 있다.

The Korean division of LG announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that the FOSS operating system WebOS will be used to power 70% of the company's SmartTV models in 2014. WebOS started its life as the operating system for the Palm handheld devices. Following Hewlett-‐Packard's acquisition of Palm the software was released to the public as the openWebOS project.
Although initially thought of as a mobile device operating system, WebOS has found new life as an open source software for new wave of high-‐tech television entertainment systems. WebOS enabled TVs will come with the typical Smart TV features like apps for streaming services such as etflix, Amazon, Hulu and other online content providers and will also offer features including a built in web browser and popular phone applications such as Twitter.
The openWebOS project is also making heavy use of the another open source project sponsored by LG, EnyoJS. EnyoJS is a cross platform application development kit that allows for creating mobile and desktop applications using the same code base.
