Valve the entertainment software company responsible for creating the Steam gaming platform recently announced the availability for download of an open source operating system called SteamOS.
Valve has been a long time leader in Linux gaming and is not a new comer to the gaming world but has traditionally produced and distributed video games for desktop and laptop computers. With the SteamBox, Valve will be bridging the gap into the market of console gaming as a direct competitor to the Microsoft's Xbox, Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's Wii. The SteamBox is positioned to be a revolutionary product that combines the best elements of both console and desktop computer gaming.
Valve also announced its manufacturing partners and has already begun manufacturing SteamBox products. A beta of SteamOS is available for download for free.
The SteamBox runs on a modified version of the open source operating system Debian GNU/Linux, a world class operating system typically used to run servers and on desktops by open source enthusiasts. Other successful products based on Debain GNU/Linux include Canonical's Ubuntu Linux operating system, the most popular Linux desktop in the world. The SteamOS is so closely related to Debian and Ubuntu that it even has a hidden mode that when accessed, SteamBox users will be able to run a full computer desktop including word processing, email, and web browsing.
